Just…one more…Kurama photo…

This one is gorgeous. Always thought it was funny that the Haruna and Shirane-class helicopter destroyers had two forward 5″ guns. Then again, the ships date from the early to mid-Seventies, and probably all MSDF destroyers had two guns back then.

The MSDF and the Horn of Africa

Meet two of the destroyers assigned to the Japanese anti-piracy patrol off the Horn of Africa. At the time Google’s satellite did a pass over Djibouti, these two ships were in port. Here’s an interesting article from someone who appears to be a U.S. Navy veteran with experience interacting with Maritime Self Defense Force members, and compares the institutional cultures of both. Well worth reading. In the Japanese military, members often reach a rank plateau and simply stay there for the rest of their careers. Thus it’s...

The latest boat in the Soryu class — check the X – shaped tail fin configuration. Due for commissioning sometime in mid 2011. What’s with the protrusion on the port aft side? You can see it during the Big Slide. Looks like some kind of box. Temporary, to hide some new feature?

Putting Japanese planes on American carriers?

Here’s an idea I hadn’t heard of before, and it’s kind of brilliant. Hats off to Galrahn at Information Dissemination: If the US Navy truly believes the Carrier Strike Group is the focal point of naval power, why wouldn’t the US Navy examine the possibilities for an integrated, international option when it comes...
