Two MSDF destroyers recently visited Kochi, India. The ships are Samidare (above) a Murasame-class destroyer, and Umigiri, an Asagiri-class destroyer. Wary of their mutual neighbor China, India and Japan have in recent years been expanding their cooperation on defense issues.

UPDATE: Reader Susumu from Surveillance To Go Nowhere says that the ships are headed to Djibouti as the 9th Deployment Surface Force Counter Piracy Enforcement, and have stopped in Kochi to refuel. Also, as of Jul. 11, they have yet to take over the escort operation.
