While I’ve been putting together the Futenma posts the big news has been that the People’s Liberation Army Navy made an appearance off Okinawa. 90 miles southwest of Okinawa, to be precise. The Japan Times says it was eight surface combatants (of a total estimated PLAN inventory of 75-77) and two submarines, both of which were surfaced.

The Chinese claim that the ships were on a routine training exercise.

According to the AP report, Japan asked for an explanation for the incident and was told “its request is being considered.” Three days later, the explanation appeared in the Chinese press. Make of that what you will.

If the Chinese were trying to send a signal, the timing and location couldn’t have been more ill-suited.
