This article with Dutch academic Karel van Wolferen about the U.S. – Japan alliance is food for thought. You’ll find it here.

The article falls into the “America killed the Hatoyama administration” category. “Washington wanted to torpedo the Hatoyama government,” van Wolferen says, “and they succeeded.” Why? Because, he explains, it wasn’t the LDP, America’s faithful lap dog. “Washington wants an administration like they had before, that will do what they say.”

I originally had several paragraphs of commentary, but realized this one question will do:

How does one foreign government topple another by doing absolutely nothing?
